Tralee

Capital of Kerry and seat of the FitzGeralds of Desmond until their earldom was destroyed in 1583. The Rose of Tralee festival, which began in 1959, grew out of a nineteenth-century ballad about a servant girl and the merchant's son who loved her.

• Rattoo round tower · A perfect 11th-century round tower — with a sheela-na-gig carved inside a window: a bold female figure on a holy building, 900 years old and still shocking.
• Slieve Mish — the Milesian landing · The sons of Míl, ancestors of the Gaels, landed beneath these mountains and fought the Tuatha Dé Danann — who, defeated, retreated underground into the sídhe.
