|---|
The smallest official land division in Ireland, often a few hundred acres. There are over 61,000 of them. Townlands are older than the parish and barony system above them and are still used in addresses, land records and census returns, which is why they matter so much for tracing family history.
Most Irish records are arranged by them. The 1901 and 1911 censuses, Griffith's Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Books are all found by county, then barony or parish, then townland, and many townland names repeat across the country.
Townland names, Irish names, parishes, baronies, areas and positions from townlands.ie ↗, which maps them in OpenStreetMap (data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL; the download is dated April 2022). About two in three townlands there carry an Irish name; where none is shown, the source has none. For the official Irish form of any townland, see Logainm.ie ↗.
