Quick answers
What is a barony in Ireland?

A subdivision of a county, larger than a civil parish and made up of townlands. Most were set out between the 16th and 19th centuries, many on the lines of older Gaelic territories. They have no function today, but census returns, land records and the Griffith's Valuation are arranged by them, which makes them essential for tracing family history.

How many townlands are there in Ireland?

Townlands.ie, which maps them from OpenStreetMap, counts 61,095. Cork has the most (5,472) and Carlow the fewest (601).

Which county has the most baronies?

Cork, with 24.

Baronies from Wikipedia's List of baronies of Ireland ↗, whose Irish names are cited to Logainm.ie ↗ and areas to the 1840s parliamentary returns (statute acres). "By 1672" and similar dates mean the barony is first recorded by then. Townland counts from townlands.ie ↗, which maps townland boundaries in OpenStreetMap; in a few counties the mapping is not yet complete (Clare's covers about 95% of the county), so treat those counts as a floor. Civil parishes from Wikipedia's List of civil parishes of Ireland ↗ (2511 county entries; a parish that crosses a county boundary is listed in each), with townland counts in brackets from townlands.ie where the names match.
