Privacy & cookies
Short version: no accounts, no ads, no selling of data. Here is everything this site does.
Analytics
- Rybbit (self-hosted) — counts visits and popular pages without cookies and without storing personal profiles. It runs regardless of the cookie banner because it doesn't use cookies or track you across sites.
- Search words — when you search the site, the words you type are sent to our own counter (log.myireland.ie), with which search box you used and whether anything was found. It keeps only a daily count of each search: no IP address, no cookie, nothing else about you, and anything that looks like an email address or phone number is thrown away. We use it to see what readers look for that the site does not have yet.
- Google Analytics 4 — loads only if you press Accept on the cookie banner. It sets cookies to distinguish returning visitors and helps us understand how people use the atlas. If you decline (or ignore the banner), it never loads. You can change your mind by clearing this site's data in your browser — the banner will ask again. If you accept, it also records the words you type into the site's search boxes (for example a surname or a place), and whether anything was found, so we can see what readers look for and add what is missing. The words are sent without your name, email or anything else you have typed elsewhere on the site.
The corrections form
If you send a correction, we receive only what you type. Name and email are optional; if given, we use them solely to credit you or reply about your submission. Nothing is stored beyond that purpose.
Local preferences
Your language choice (English/Gaeilge) and cookie decision are stored in your own browser's local storage. They never leave your device.
