The story

Woulfe gives it in one line: descendant of Codladh, sleep, a rare Kerry surname, pronounced Ó Collata. He records O Collitie, Culloty and Cullity as the anglicised forms. It belongs to the country either side of the Cork and Kerry border, the district called Sliabh Luachra. Two of the best-known bearers are sportsmen. Johnny Culloty of Killarney kept goal for Kerry, won five All-Irelands, captained the 1969 win and managed the county from 1972. Jim Culloty rode Best Mate to three Cheltenham Gold Cups, won the 2002 Grand National on Bindaree, and later trained a Gold Cup winner of his own.
