The story

The 14th most common surname in Spain and one of the great names of the Spanish-speaking world. And now an Irish one too. Spain and Ireland go back a long way: in 1529 a Spanish ambassador met the Earl of Desmond at Dingle; in 1601 a Spanish army landed at Kinsale to fight beside O'Neill; after the Flight of the Earls in 1607 Irish soldiers served Spain for two centuries, and Irishmen rose to govern Mexico and Peru. Today the traffic runs the other way: over 4,000 Spanish citizens arrived in Ireland in 2021 alone, and tens of thousands study English here each year — the Díazes among them are writing the newest chapter of the Irish story.
