Tipperary
well of the Ara; the article ties it to the River Ara, which rises at a well in Glenbane, while Joyce takes Ara to be the ancient territory and places the well near Main Street, by then closed up
The town that gave its name to the county, though Clonmel is the county seat. Its Main Street has a bronze of Charles Kickham and the Maid of Erin, a 1907 memorial to the Manchester Martyrs. The War of Independence opened nearby at Soloheadbeg on 21 January 1919, and in 1890 evicted tenants built a whole "New Tipperary" outside the landlord's reach.
The town had a medieval foundation and became a population centre in the early 13th century; its old fortifications have disappeared, much of the stone reused in later buildings. A large British Army barracks was built between 1874 and 1878, used for training in the First World War and as a Black and Tan base in the War of Independence. In 1888-89 tenants of Arthur Smith Barry withheld rent in support of his Cork tenants and were evicted. Led by Fr David Humphreys and William O'Brien, they built a new town around today's Dillon Street and Emmet Street with money raised in Australia and America, and the William O'Brien Arcade opened on 12 April 1890 before a compromise brought them back.
On 30 September 2005 President Mary McAleese unveiled the restored Memorial Arch of the barracks, the only surviving porch of the officers' mess. Locals set up the Tipperary International Peace Award to counter the town's link with war through the song It's a Long Way to Tipperary, first given to Seán MacBride in 1984 and later to Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai among others.
