Shannon

One of Ireland's newest towns, given town status on 1 January 1982 and built from nothing beside the airport. Shannon had the world's first duty-free shop, and the town was raised to house the people working the industrial zone around it. Its name goes back to a goddess who drowned in a well; the town is about sixty years old.

Shannon is a new town, built in the 1960s on reclaimed marshland beside Shannon Airport and the Shannon Free Zone, a project led by Brendan O'Regan, to house the workers of the airport and the new industries around it. Growth was slower than planned. The first school opened in 1962, the parish of Shannon was created on 24 December 1967, and from 1980 to 1986 GAC Ireland built almost all of CIÉ's buses here.
