Shannon

Ireland's newest town, given town status on 1 January 1982 and built from nothing beside the airport. Shannon had the world's first duty-free shop, and the town was raised to house the people working the industrial zone around it. Its name goes back to a goddess who drowned in a well; the town is about sixty years old.

• Treaty Stone, Limerick · The block on which the 1691 Treaty was supposedly signed — its promises to Catholics broken so fast that Limerick is still 'the city of the violated treaty'.
