Dromore
'large ridge' (older Druim Mór); Joyce's index agrees: 'great ridge'
A market town on the Lagan whose Market Square still has a rare set of stocks. It is the traditional seat of the Bishop of Dromore, from an abbey attributed to St Colman in the 6th century. In March 1689 Jacobites routed the Williamites a mile outside town at the 'Break of Dromore', leaving 400 dead.
The diocese grew from an abbey attributed to St Colman in the 6th century. John de Courcy built the motte and bailey known as 'the Mound' in the early 13th century, and Edward Bruce took and destroyed the place in 1315. The town and cathedral were wholly destroyed in 1641; Bishop Jeremy Taylor built the present cathedral in 1661 and is buried there, as is Bishop Thomas Percy. On 14 March 1689 Jacobites under Richard Hamilton routed Williamite forces at the Break of Dromore and then met no resistance as they advanced to Belfast.
The town had 2,110 people in 1841, and its railway station ran from 1863 to 1956. On 23 July 1920 a crowd of about 500 attacked Catholic homes and businesses, and an Orangeman was shot dead by a police bullet. In 1976 an IRA incendiary attack on a drapery shop in Market Square killed three members of the Herron family, and in 1988 Terence Delaney was shot dead by the UFF.
