The story

A town on the Inishowen peninsula near Trawbreaga Bay, laid out around a central 'diamond' and dominated by its Romanesque Revival Catholic church. Its great treasure is the Carndonagh stones, five sculpted stones dated to between the 7th and 9th centuries. Joyce records the local saying that snow lingers on Slieve Snaght until the May fair in Carndonagh.

The history of Carndonagh

The Carndonagh stones, five carved stones dated to between the 7th and 9th centuries, stand in the town, and ringforts, souterrains, a chambered cairn and standing stones in Ballylosky, Churchland Quarters and Tullanree show older settlement. The Church of Ireland church was built around 1769, the Methodist chapel in 1867 and the Presbyterian church in 1886, while the Catholic church, on the site of a smaller 19th-century chapel, was finished in 1945. The railway station opened in July 1907 and closed in December 1935.
