Archbishop of Armagh and the great reorganiser of the Irish church along European lines. He brought the Cistercians to Ireland and founded Mellifont in 1142, and died in the arms of his friend Bernard at Clairvaux in 1148 — the first native-born Irish saint to be formally canonised, in 1199.
