Youghal

A walled Norman port at the mouth of the Blackwater. Walter Raleigh was its mayor and lived at Myrtle Grove; the story that he planted Ireland's first potatoes here is a good one that historians cannot verify. Moby Dick was filmed in the harbour in 1954.

Youghal is Eochaill, the yew wood. Neolithic people lived nearby at Newport, the Church of Coran dates from the 5th century, and St Mary's Collegiate Church is thought to have been founded by St Declán around 450, rebuilt about 750 and given a Norman nave about 1220; it is one of the few medieval churches in Ireland in continuous use, and a stone in it bears the outline of a Viking longboat. The Vikings used Youghal as a base in the 11th century, and the town got its charter in 1209; its walls are first recorded in 1275.

On 13 November 1579 the Earl of Desmond sacked Youghal, the centre of English power in south Munster, killing the garrison and hanging the officials; the reprisals that followed included the killing of the friar Daniel O'Neilan in 1580. The Jesuit brother Dominic Collins was hanged here in 1602 and beatified in 1992. Sir Walter Raleigh's house, Myrtle Grove, still stands, and Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, built the almshouses for widows and a school. The Clock Gate Tower of 1777 served as the town's jail and gallows until 1837, and suspects were hanged from its windows in 1798.
