Omagh

The county town of Tyrone, where the Drumragh and Camowen meet to form the Strule. In August 1998, months after the Good Friday Agreement, a car bomb killed 29 people and unborn twins — the single deadliest attack of the Troubles, and one that hardened the peace rather than breaking it.

• Knockmany — Fionn and Oonagh’s hill · Folklore gives this hilltop to Fionn mac Cumhaill and his wife Oonagh. Older by far is what is actually on it: a passage tomb of about 3000 BC, thirteen sandstone uprights carved with spirals, circles and zigzags. The name is Cnoc mBáine — Báine’s hill, for a goddess of whiteness later folded into Áine.
