Lisnaskea
Lios na Scéithe
'fort of the shield'
The story
The second town of Fermanagh, and the seat of the Maguires before the plantation: their inauguration mound at Sciath Gabhra is what the name remembers. Castle Balfour was raised over it afterwards by a Scottish planter, and the town grew around the two of them.
Worth seeing nearby
- Clones · Tigernach’s 6th-century monastery. A round tower, a stone sarcophagus said to be the saint’s, and a five-metre high cross whose shaft was carved between 825 and 875 — the head added later, by other hands.
All of these are pinned on the Hidden Ireland map.
