Lisnaskea

The second town of Fermanagh, and the seat of the Maguires before the plantation: their inauguration mound at Sciath Gabhra is what the name remembers. Castle Balfour was raised over it afterwards by a Scottish planter, and the town grew around the two of them.

Lisnaskea is Lios na Scéithe, the fort of the shield. North of the town, at Cornashee, a great burial mound inside a round enclosure is believed to be Sciath Ghabhra, where the Maguires, kings of Fermanagh, were inaugurated. A ringfort in Castle Balfour Demesne has been dated to AD 359–428, and the ruins of St Ronan's monastery lie west of the town. In 1618 the Scot James, Lord Balfour, built Castle Balfour, whose remains stand off the Main Street; in 1641 more than 100 people, most of them Scots, were killed at Lisnaskea. The Earls of Erne took over the town in 1821. The workhouse, opened in 1843 for 500, held 817 people by the end of 1846.
