Manorhamilton

Two names and two histories in one place. The little meadow belonged to the O'Rourkes, lords of West Bréifne, until the Crown took it; Sir Frederick Hamilton, a Scottish Covenanter, built his castle over it in 1634 and gave the town his own name. The Burkes burned the castle in 1652 and it has stood a ruin since.

• Tobernalt Holy Well · A Penal-era Mass site in a wooded glen where the priest's stone altar still stands — the well older than Patrick, the crowds still gathering on Garland Sunday.
• Creevelea Friary · The last Franciscan house founded in Ireland before the suppression — 1508, by Eóghan O’Rourke of West Bréifne and his wife Margaret O’Brian. Burned by accident in 1536 and rebuilt, dissolved about 1598, reoccupied in 1642, cleared out by the Cromwellians, and lived in again after that until 1837. A cloister carving shows Francis preaching to the birds.
• Shannon Pot — Sionann’s well · Sionann, granddaughter of the sea god Manannán mac Lir, came to the well of knowledge for its forbidden fruit. The water rose and took her, and went on rising — it is the Shannon, and it still carries her name.
• Benbulben — Diarmuid's death · End of the great elopement: Diarmuid, who fled with Gráinne from Fionn, is gored by the enchanted boar here, and Fionn lets the healing water run through his fingers.
• Lough Gill — the Isle of Innisfree · Not myth but poem: Yeats's lake isle, where the 'bee-loud glade' and the fairy faith of Sligo gave a modern poet his oldest music.
• Glencar — the stolen child · Yeats put this waterfall into a poem in 1886 and the faeries came with it: they call a child away from a world too full of weeping. It is a made thing, not an old story — but people have been coming to look at the water because of it for well over a century now.
