Edgeworthstown

Also called Mostrim. The Edgeworths were the local landlords and an unusually inventive family: Richard Lovell Edgeworth installed a semaphore telegraph line, and his daughter Maria wrote Castle Rackrent in 1800, the first Irish regional novel and one Walter Scott said set him on his own path.

The town's Irish name is Meathas Troim, the frontier of the elder tree, anglicised Mostrim. It was named Edgeworthstown in the 19th century after the Anglo-Irish Edgeworths, whose estate here was built by Richard Lovell Edgeworth and was home to the novelist Maria Edgeworth, the botanist Michael Pakenham Edgeworth and the economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. In 1935, at the request of the local tenants' association, the county council changed the name to Mostrim; in 1974 it was changed back, and both names are still used.
