Q: Who was St Gall?

Hermit of the Alps. One of the twelve who left Bangor with Columbanus. When the others pressed on into Italy he stayed behind, ill, in the Alpine forest — and the abbey and city that grew around his cell became St Gallen, whose library still holds Irish manuscripts with ogham and Old Irish scribbles in the margins.
