Founded his monastery on a cliff above the Lee, beside the great marsh (corcach) that gave Cork its name. His hermitage at Gougane Barra, on an island in a mountain lake at the source of the Lee, is one of the loveliest places in Ireland and still draws pilgrims on his feast.
