Tulach is a small hill, a knoll, a mound — smaller than a cnoc, often artificial or thought to be, and often an assembly place. Tullamore is the big hillock; Tullow, Tully and Tullagh are the same word in different mouths. Because assemblies and inaugurations were held on such mounds, a Tully- name sometimes marks a place that mattered out of all proportion to its size.
