Oak wood, oak grove. Written Derry, Derri — the same Irish word, doire, in the spellings English gave it.
Doire is an oak wood, or an oak grove, and Derry- names record the oak forests that once covered much of the island and are now almost entirely gone. Derry the city is Doire Cholm Cille, Colmcille's oak grove; the Londonderry of the 1613 charter is the same place with the London companies' name in front. The tree survives in a thousand townland names long after it was cut.
