What a sweathouse is

A sweathouse (teach allais, "house of sweat") is a small stone hot-air house, a kind of traditional sauna, found in rural Ireland and most of all in the north-west, with over 100 in County Leitrim. They are usually dry-stone, single-chambered and windowless, often corbelled, with a low narrow doorway to keep the heat in, and many stand beside a stream or lake because people would plunge into cold water afterwards. They were used for rheumatism and a long list of other ailments. The first written account is from 1796, by the French traveller the Chevalier de Latocnaye, who saw them used as a cure for sore eyes. (Wikipedia, "Irish sweathouse" ↗)

How old the tradition is, nobody knows. Some scholars suggest the idea of hot-air baths came with Roman missionaries when Christianity reached Ireland; others suggest the Vikings brought it. Wikipedia's article says the tradition could be much older, and that the question stays open until better evidence turns up. Sweathouses can also be mistaken for clocháns and lime kilns.
