Maigh Eo · Connacht
There were people at Belderrig on the north Mayo coast by about 4500 BC, and the Neolithic farmers who followed laid out the walled fields now under the bog at the Céide Fields; the county has more than 160 recorded megalithic tombs, of all four Irish types. Croagh Patrick is where Patrick is believed to have prayed for forty days and nights, and monasteries followed at Mayo Abbey, Aughagower, Ballintubber, Cong, Killala, Turlough and on islands off the Mullet. Vikings raided from 795 but, unusually, founded no town here.
