Mount Sandel, near Coleraine, is perhaps the oldest recorded settlement in Ireland, and the county has a rich prehistoric landscape at Ballygroll and elsewhere. In the Middle Ages this was O'Cahan's country, tributary to the O'Neills, and late in Elizabeth I's reign it was seized and made the county of Coleraine.
