Gaillimh · Connacht
Shell middens show people in the Galway area by about 5000 BC. Before the county existed its land was several kingdoms — Aidhne, Uí Maine, Maigh Seóla, Conmhaicne Mara, Soghain and Máenmag — and Connemara still keeps its own identity, though nobody agrees where its borders run: somewhere between a fifth and a third of the county.
