How the dates were chosen

A castle is placed here only if Wikidata holds a single build date for it, or if its own Wikipedia article says in its opening lines when it was built — in which case the phrase is quoted, so "built before 1570" stays "before 1570". A castle built in stages is placed by the first date given. The other 246 castles have no date stated in either place, and are left out rather than guessed.
